This style of abaya, which can also double as a maxi cardigan, has been my most requested DIY lately. The great thing is it's pretty simple to make once you have your pattern pieces drafted. You can trace your pattern directly on your fabric but why not make a pattern so you have it ready to go and make again? 

Lace Trim | Black Fancy Lace 

For my abaya/cardigan I used 4.5 yards of fabric and 4.25 yards of the lace trim. The amount of fabric needed will vary based on your measurements. You can make this out of just about any fabric but I would suggest a light weight woven fabric to give it a nice flow. You may also need invisible thread to sew the lace trim down and wonder tape.

Since I used a lining fabric that is a touch on the slippery side it served two purposes for me. One it held my fabric together and two it helped stabilize my fabric. Can't be mad at that.

Have fun with this DIY. There are so many different ways you can customize and make it your own. Make the cuffs and trim a different color, add lace trim to the sleeves or make it floor length for a little extra flair.  Your options are endless.  I have worn both contact lenses and glasses since the 8th grade and these lenses by far are some of the best I've tried. I mentioned in my video review that contact lenses seem like such a throwback to the 90's for me. That's the last time I remember wearing color lenses. But let me tell you, color lenses have come a long way since then. 

The lenses below are all from ParanaLentes.com. I have 3 different styles and 5 different colors to show you.  The pics are references to go along with my full video review below. The lenses come in a box with a info pamphlet, case and your lenses. The hidrocor and natural color lenses come in little glass containers. The solflex natural colors come in plastic packets. You get 2 lenses that are the same prescription. If you need them with power(prescription) and each eye is a different prescription you may need 2 packs. 

These lenses look great on my deep chocolate eye color so if you have pretty brown eyes(singing mint condition) like me you'll love these. 

Solflex Natural Color lenses are monthly lenses that have an outer ring.

Nadira037 | Flowy Long Sleeved Crop Top

In my high low circle skirt tutorial, here, I asked if you guys wanted to see a crop tutorial. A lot of you responded with a definite yes. So of course I had to make that happen for my Material Girl fam. The full tutorial is below along with some helpful info, other tutorials and tips. Click here if you can't see the video.

The fabric I used is a Nicole Miller knit that I love. I couldn't find the actual fabric on the website so here's a link for a similar fabric by Nicole Miller. Bonus, it's on sale right now!

I used a 1.5 yards of fabric but the amount you need will vary based on your measurements. I used Nicole Miller knit in the video because the white fabric was too light weight for my liking. A little too flowy if you will. I suggest a medium weight or rayon/spandex knit but the point of DIY is being able to make it how you want to.  So with that said feel free to use any knit fabric you like. 

I also made the top high low but you could make both the front & back the same length or low in the front & high in the back. Get creative, have fun and make it your own. If you do try out this tutorial use #materialgirl or #nadira037 so I can see and share.

FAQ'S

Why did I subtract 3-5 inches form your waistline?  Using a knit fabric for a waist band is similar to using elastic for a waistband. You want to make sure it fits securely. You also want it to be tight enough to hold the weight of a full circle skirt. The amount you subtract will vary based on the fit you want.

How much seam allowance did you use? I use 5/8" but you can use what ever you're comfortable sewing with.

What fabric did you use for your skirt in the picture? I used a Ponte de Roma that doesn't  have the same stretch of a jersey knit. If yo want to use a Ponte de Roma subtract less from your waist because it has less give. I suggest trying first with scrap fabric to get the measurement right.

What if I don't have a serger? How would I sew the waistband? You can sew the waist band fabric together with with wrong sides facing each other. Then turn it right sides out and attach to your skirt.
